My best sentences of today make a controversial claim; go ahead and debate me in the comments if you feel so inclined.
Everything can be gamed; there is no scenario that completely precludes play. It is simply a matter of being trained to perceive what is ludic about any given context or platform.
Not sure why the argument represented by these sentences would be controversial. I suppose you can't say on this blog, since its format seems pretty strict. But if you can, fill us in -- who believes there are scenarios that completely preclude play?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, cool idea for a site. It makes me feel two things simultaneously: 1. You're probably writing a very compelling dissertation. 2. I'm very, very glad I don't have to write one.
What about a trip to the local colonic hydrotherapist?

Is life a game or something grander? if we cannot possibly percieve what is ludic about a system then how can we ascribe it the abstract properties of a game. We may make up senarios within life or set goals and assume games, but these are not congruent with such a thing as life, for they are merely passing moments in it. like in physics a fluid system creates chaos.

I think that Wittgenstein has some remarks in this line about the raise and use of language. And if you start that way in your mode of comunicating with others, why not in the whole of your conceptual frame by witch you judge the world?
ReplyDeleteI suppose that quinean pragmatism follow this line too; so I would look for the critics on papers like "on what there is" or maybe "two dogmas of empiricism". Just an idea :)
Well, nevertheless, you must know a lot more than me about all this stuff. Pardon me my mispelled english, I`m out of practice.
No debate here about the sentence, but the word "ludic" caught my eye. It is not a word you see every day, although the French use it regularly (ludique) and I tend to translate it as "playful" or "entertaining." Glad to see I can use it as is, although it will make half the population scratch their heads and open a dictionary.

That sounds like something that my mom told me before my first day of work, "just make a game out of any thing you do and your day will go by much faster." This leads to two ideas.
ReplyDeleteFirst, scraping crap out of fifty pounds of shrimp is not a game (a job I had as a prep-cook).
Second, is life so bad that we need to game everything? I realize the benefits of any visceral effect, but what are you really trying to escape in the end, is it all just another game?
p.s. there’s an idea for you, kinda “life aquatica,” a game about gaming, who can get the character with the best character?
Well... i don't see any controversies in this sentense. But many of us might differ on the conotations. It obviously depends on which side of the coin you view from. Very innovative blog.
